I reached out to a colleague who was aware of the goings-on there and was informed that there was a rumor going around that the company may have suspended operations. Another colleague informed me that the theatre with which he is affiliated has not heard from SITV about booking touring dates at that theatre, which they had done in the past.

At worst, it’s willful engagement in unfair labor practices.

Clearly there needs to be an effort to educate smaller companies about appropriate employment/contract practices.

Likewise, those entities sponsoring large cattle call auditions (like Straw Hat) need to step up and set some expectations about the practices of those companies they allow to participate in their auditions.

In the stage management class I teach, we go over both AEA and non-Equity contracts, looking for language that is open to interpretation. The students are always surprised at some of the things non-Equity companies ask their employees to give up (or pay for!).
