Comments on: Are Any Voices Being Silenced in the Chat Room Wars of 2016? in partnership with the New School Sat, 19 Aug 2017 10:59:45 +0000 hourly 1 By: Austin Mon, 14 Mar 2016 15:14:00 +0000 Murin, and others agreeing with her, are certainly correct to implore members of BroadwayWorld (and other such boards) to be more civil and remember there are people who read what is written. My issue lies with numerous people posting on various social media, in response to Murin, that the message board should be shut down *entirely* due to their perceived “toxicity.” Kurt Deutsch, the prominent cast recording producer of Ghostlist/Sh-K-Boom, asserted that all legitimate theatre websites have gotten rid of them; the operator of ticket broker Broadway . com boasted of how he deleted their board long ago. Several notable performers and their supporters likewise called for removal of the board.
The idea that a forum for discussion should be shut down entirely because you do not like what (or more accurately in this situation, how) things are discussed is suppressive ideology at worst. At best, it is cutting one’s nose to spite one’s face, because these message boards are invaluable to a theatrical fanbase.
